Finishing the game

Games will last until either the Army Break point has been achieved (page 46 Armies of Antiquities or www.warhammer-historical.com) or when 2.5 hours have elapsed.

A bonus will be awarded for reaching ABP depending on army class.

A = 600

B = 450

C = 250

Sportsmanship

This score is based on your opponent’s behaviour during the game, not on his/her army.

You will be handed a sheet to score your opponents and this will be collected at the end of the tournament.  You can leave the score sheet blank and your opponent will be awarded a score of three, alternatively you can mark your opponent as a + or -, this will improve or detract from the players score.

Examples of good sportsmanship.

·         Not removing your dice before your opponent has had a chance to see what was rolled.

·         Reminding your opponent of a special rule your troops possess.

·         Counting out the target number before rolling your dice.

Painting

There will be a separate award for best-painted army, competitors will be asked to vote on this during the competition.

You will not be awarded any points for painting; however those entering without a painted army will have 32 points deducted from their total score.

What you see is what is what you get

Players are asked to be as WYSIWIG as possible with their army as this aids play and helps to avoid confusion.  An army not deemed, as WYSIWIG may at the Umpires discretion have 32 points deducted from their total score.

Rules Queries

Tommy Brown will be the umpire for this event.

In the event of a rules debate roll a D6.

Please remember to check the rulebook first, most answer will be there.

If this does not resolve the issues please seek out Tommy for adjudication, this decision is binding.

Remember it is only a game.

The Umpire is free to interrupt any game to clarify or point out mistakes to players.

Winning the event

1.       Scores of 160 for Gaming, 25 for Sportsmanship and 25 for Army Selection, which adds up to a grand total of 210 points available.

2.       The overall winner will be the player with the highest grand total. In the event of a tie, the player with the highest Gaming score will be the winner. If this is a tie, Sportsmanship and Painting scores will also be considered, in that order.

3.       All marks for aspects, other than game results, will be added in after the last game has commenced. This will ensure the best generals are always competing against one another.

The Games

The Board

All games will be played on a 6 x 4 gaming table.

Terrain

Each player is to provide a pool of 1 to 3 items of terrain. They are to be no larger than 8” x 8” or 12” in length for a linear obstacle. At the beginning of your first game both players will pool all of their terrain and then alternate in placing it (throw a D6 to see who starts). Terrain may not be placed in the centre 12” x 12” of the table, when all the terrain has been placed use a scatter dice and 3D6 in order to randomise each piece. If a feature hits the table edge or another piece that it cannot be superimposed on then bounce it back its remaining distance at an angle of 180’ to its original direction. A hit on the scatter dice means the feature does not move. Terrain features can be difficult or very difficult, but not impassable. No more than 2 of the same types of feature are allowed.

The terrain will then remain on the table for all subsequent games over the weekend.

Scenarios

Game 1

This will be played using the pitched battle scenario and will use the secret disposition rule.  A4 sheets with a pre-drawn table and deployment zone will be provided.

Game 2

This will be played using the Apellido scenario from El-Cid and will use the deployment rules detailed in the scenario.  Details for this scenario will be provided at the event if you do not own El-Cid, alternatively email the event organiser.

Game 3

This will be played using the Meeting Engagement and will use the deployment rules detailed in the scenario.

Game 4

This will be played using the pitched battle scenario and will use the secret disposition rule.  A4 sheets with a pre-drawn table and deployment zone will be provided.

Game 5

This will be played using the Surprise Attack and will use the deployment rules detailed in the scenario.

The ABC Lists

The system has been developed with the intention of narrowing the discrepancies between the different WAB supplements that have been currently published.  The list is constantly evolving as people play with different armies and combinations and adapt the lists, this is not the final version but it is a final version.

A

1850

B

2000

C

2200

The following caveats will be applied to the army list you decide to take, in an attempt to allow as much variation as possible.

Any Allies & Mercenaries (from outside your main army list), or 4+ Warwagons, or 4+ Elephants, or 3+ Warmachines, or a Godi, or a Crusading Bishop – go up 1 level. i.e. C becomes B, B becomes A.

Each of the following are worth '1 point'. For 1-2 points, no change, for 3-4 points go up one level. For >4 points go up 2 levels.

First Charge; Ferocious Charge; Nomad Cavalry; Superior cavalry; Eastern Shock cavalry; Special Deployment; Light Cavalry 3+ save; Berserkers and any troop type with 4 or more special rules (this includes Almughavars!).

Each troop choice only counts for one type i.e. A unit with First charge and 4 special rules would only count once, not once under each category.

Amendments

Alexander the Great

Using AtG for Successors (Imperial list):

Remove all restrictions on (EX) units. Allow Epigonoi to be fielded without restricting Pezhetairoi.  Epigonoi are "levies".

WAB Rulebook

Note the Chinese list has been superseded by AoW

Achaemenid Persian

Spara: Use the Cane Shieldwall rules in its entirety from B:BTGG; all of a unit must have Spara’s to benefit from the rule.

Allies: The Persian army may include allies from the Ancient Greek list as part of their special troops allocation.

Ancient Greek

In order to use Sacred Band, there can be no Spartans in the army, and there must be at least one other unit of Hoplites within the army.

Nomad Horde

A unit that uses feigned flight and flees off the table is lost, and may not return later in the game. Nomad horse that use the 4” bonus move for skirmishers in the pitched battle scenario, may not take the free march move.

Crusaders

Please note that Knights and Sergeants are mounted on Warhorses, even though the characteristic line has been omitted.

Samurai

Increase the cost of Samurai cavalry to 35 points and Samurai infantry to 20 points. Wakato should have Ld value of 5.

Ancient Briton

In section 4 replace the third bullet (the one that starts “The player controlling…”) with the following: To represent the trick of the warriors in the chariot dismounting to fight on foot, the formation counts as having a rank bonus of +1 if there are 8-11 models in the unit, and +2 if there are 12 or more models in the unit.

Fall of the West:

Page 48, The Currus Drepanus are allowed. Please note these chariots are not bound by the minimum unit size of 3.

Shieldwall:

Page 90, Heirlooms: No heirlooms are allowed in this year’s competition.

Spartacus:

Page 12, Hates Romans: is what it says. Units with this rule can only use it against Romans.

Byzantium, Beyond the Golden Gate:

Page 7, In Period Cavalry Rules and Out of Period Gaming: If additional points are paid for Superior Cavalry as shown for Massed archery and Marching cavalry on page 7, then the player may use the attribute in all games. If the points have not been paid these abilities will not apply, even if both armies are from B:BTGG.

Where troops are listed as having First Charge, or Ferocious Charge, they have the rules as they are written in the supplement concerned. Ferocious Charge is not down rated to First charge or visa versa.

The Art of War:

Page 26, heroic combat “challenges” cannot be made.

Page 120, no Ruses are allowed.

General

Fielding an Elephant does not make your army “used to elephants”

Special characters may not be taken, the Great King is not a special character.

All current online errata’s from Warhammer Historical’s website will be used.

These amendments are now also included in the version 1.2 of the core Warhammer ancient battles rulebook, all rules in the new version of the rulebook will be used including the 2 optional new rules on page 157.

However the incidental charges rule (clipping) specifically diagram 151.3 on page 151 of the rulebook will not be used.

Also, to clarify, the reform rule (page 157) does not affect troops with special reform abilities such as Andalusian or Arab Cavalry; similarly it does not affect reforms at the end of a feigned flight or fall back in good order move.

A single dice may never be re-rolled more than once.

Oracles: If a unit or army standard is applied to a hand to hand combat result then no oracles may be used to add to the Combat Result. However, oracles may still be used to re-roll leadership and break tests even if standards are involved. Oracles may not be applied to skirmisher combat resolution, but may be used for re-rolls of leadership tests.

Wedge combat: In the case of chariots ridden by characters, each character counts separately from the chariot model for purposes of counting how many models may strike back that are not in contact with the apex of the wedge. For example if a wedge of ten models strikes a unit of five Heavy Chariots that contain three characters, then the chariot in contact would fight back with the character and chariot. The other out of contact characters would count as separate models from their chariots, so the player may need to choose which models would attack in this circumstance. If skirmishing troops charge a wedge, the wedge does not flatten out. However the wedge may only fight with models in actual contact if hit on the side or rear.

African Elephants 'fear' Indian elephants.

Cavalry counter-charges: Light chariots may counter charge, but elephants, heavy and scythed chariots may not.
